Welcome!

The Democratic Club of the Conejo Valley is dedicated to promoting progressive ideals throughout Ventura County and California.

The DCCV is actively promoting candidates for upcoming elections, as well as informing the local community and invitingothers to be more active in creating a better society.

We hope you find this website to be informative and useful -- check back often for updates on programs, social events, and club activities.

General Meeting

of the DCCV

May 14, 6:30 pm

Thousand Oaks Library, 1401 E. Janss Rd., TO

Jill Martinez and Mary Pallant, the remaining Democratic candidates for the 24th Congressional District seat currently held by Elton Gallegly, will appear to present their campaigns and take questions from club members.

We will also be hearing from Roberto Arellano, candidate for Judge of the Ventura County Superior Court-Office No. 5. All of the candidates in the race, including Mr. Arellano, are Republicans. The Executive Board felt that since Superior Court judges are so important and the candidates so often obscure that we would honor Mr. Arellano's request to speak to the club. The other candidate for the office did not request to speak to the club.

GAS TAX HOLIDAY PROPOSAL of Senator HILLARY CLINTON

As a registered club of the California Democratic Party, the DCCV is not allowed to back either Obama or Clinton prior to the convention in Denver. And we have consistently abided by that rule. However, we believe we are all intelligent people, and we can decide for ourselves when ideas offered by either of our candidates don't pass the laugh test.

Case in point: Clinton's proposed gas tax holiday over the summer. (There's another Presidential candidate who's offering a similar proposal, but we aren't naming names.)

Is it a pander to the middle class?

Do American economists represent "the elite class" as Senator Clinton suggests?

Have economists for the federal government been working for the last 7 years to the detriment of the middle class as Senator Clinton suggests?

Who can control the oil companies and ensure they don't raise their prices by the 18 cents/gallon that the tax is worth? What will happen in the fall when the tax is reistated and the prices are higher?

What about predictions that people will drive more this summer if they don't pay the gas tax?

What about the loss of transportation jobs when there's no gas tax money to pay for highways, bridges, improvements in roads?

Anyone heard of global warming? Aren't Democrats supposed to be concerned about it? How does increased driving this summer jive with Democratic plans to get Americans weaned off of Middle East oil and moving towards a lower carbon footprint?................. Bueller? Bueller?

Here's some commentary and video from the candidates--we'll let you decide. Better yet, call the campaign offices and try to get some answers.

Conejo Valley Days were a wonderful success!!

Thanks to all of those who gave their time and energy manning the booth and registering new Democrats. Our booth was right across from the Republican booth, and while our booth enjoyed constant activity, the Repub booth was lonely, lonely, lonely. Republicans offer no hope, no ideas, no plan for the future. Democrats offer all three and more!!

The Cinco de Mayo Celebration was a blast. Thank you to Debbie Birenbaum for organizing such a fun, festive event!!!!

Republican Party Enters the Sewer with Negative Ads

The North Carolina GOP is running a "Swiftboat-style" ad against NC Democratic gubernatorial candidates Beverly Perdue and Richard Moore for supporting Obama. John McCain has asked the group not to run the ad; the group has ignored him. So McSame gets to claim the high road, but obviously enjoys the low road as well, because negative ads work, folks. Swiftboat Veterans for Truth proved that Republicans love to play dirty.

Condi Must Go!

Condoleeza Rice lied when she testified to Congress in 2005 that the US does not conduct or condone torture. In fact, she and other administration officials had discussed torture in detail, including how it should be performed. Then she authorized others to go and torture in our name, even though it was a violation of Geneva Conventions, and basically made the US a laughingstock. Join the movement to demand that Ms. Rice resign as Secretary of State here. As Democrats, we think Dick Cheney and George Bush must go, also, but we'll take it one neocon at a time.

Worst. President. Ever.

Bush and Superdome

“With his unprovoked and disastrous war of aggression in Iraq and his monstrous deficits, Bush has set this country on a course that will take decades to correct,” said another historian. “When future historians look back to identify the moment at which the United States began to lose its position of world leadership, they will point—rightly—to the Bush presidency. Thanks to his policies, it is now easy to see America losing out to its competitors in any number of areas: China is rapidly becoming the manufacturing powerhouse of the next century, India the high tech and services leader, and Europe the region with the best quality of life.”--quote from unnamed historian interviewed for Harper's Magazine.

*************************************************************

Journalists find the Bush Administration lied no fewer than 935 times to take our country to war. Read the report here.

Where are our priorities? Don't like how Bush and the Congress are spending your money? Do something about it, then!

The "War on Terra" seems to go on forever.....but are we safer?

Upcoming Outreach Activities

Precinct Walking and Outreach

As we continue to reach out to Democrats and Decline-to-State voters in our neighborhoods, we extend the opportunity for volunteers to walk their own or a nearby neighborhood. The goal is to educate voters about the Democratic Party and to get Conejo Valley residents involved with the political process--or at least get them out to vote.

Vote Blue is an organization that we work with to re-register residents who have recently located here. Outreach parties are needed to thank those who have participated in the past and to recruit new volunteers for the future. We also encourage volunteers to reach out by telephone if this method is more comfortable for them. Outreach activities are customized for each volunteer based on his or her own preference.

Please contact Jay Kapitz via email or at 818-889-1039 to sign up for outreach. Thank you!

Tabling at the Oaks Mall

DCCV continues tabling at the mall Saturdays from 12-4 pm. Tabling provides many new subscribers to receive email blasts from the club, as well as many new members and registered voters. Please contact Sean Richards (818-309-9408) to sign up for this important activity.

Upcoming Tabling Dates: TBA

On behalf of our dues paying members, it’s my pleasure to welcome you to the Democratic Club of the Conejo Valley website. We serve the Southern California cities of Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park, Westlake Village, Oak Park and surrounding communities. Stop by often to learn about current local, state and national issues, as well as upcoming local events, as we continue to update and expand our virtual home.

This is also the place to find out where you can put your ideas into action. Worried about the eroding funding for our public schools? Concerned about the rising cost of health insurance? Wondering why our public open space seems to shrink every year? Troubled by a national government that values corporations over its own individual citizens? Weary of a war that didn’t have to happen? So are we.

There’s no magic wand and no easy path, but we are doing the work required to elect people who represent our values to office in the Conejo Valley, and send representatives to Sacramento and Washington, D.C., who will be our voice and change the direction of this country.

Come to one of our meetings on the second Wednesday of the month, or send me an email, and we'll help you move from concerned citizen, to an active participant in the political process in California.

Mission Statement

We believe in good jobs, a balanced budget, choice, a clean environment, quality education, more cops on our streets and keeping guns out of the hands of criminals. We are pro-family and pro-children. We fight for a quality education and safe schools for our children. We'll continue to fight to raise the minimum wage, protect Social Security and provide quality and affordable health care for everyone.

Senator Art Torres (Ret.)

You can renew your membership, make a reservation for a special event or even make a donation to DCCV online, safely and securely, using your credit card or
